Answers to Questions About Canvas Training

How is live training conducted? What is the format?

BYU-OIT recommends live training for the best, most thorough experience. Live training on Canvas essentials and advanced topics is available every semester in on-campus classrooms - Typically in the Tanner Building (TNRB), Kimball Tower (KMBL), Joseph F. Smith Building (JFSB) or in the Lee Library (HBLL). Live trainings are typically multiple-day classes, with each class lasting one to two hours.

Is there a remote option available for those who cannot attend in-person? Are video recordings available for on-demand viewing?

It may not always be practical or possible to attend live training, so we offer remote attendance by Zoom. We also make recording links available for those with time conflicts, and to provide class review resources for all who attend. Class registration is required to attend remotely or have access to recordings.

We have found that attendance often drops when people plan to participate by video but don't follow through with those plans. Therefore, for continued access to the class, be sure to keep-up with class activities: Those who discontinue participation in classes will lose access to the Canvas course and all associated Zoom links for the remaining run of the class.

Am I required to do assignments, quizzes, or participate in other ways? What kind of a time / work commitment am I looking at?

You can attend without participating: As long as you keep showing-up, you're in!
To earn the badge associated with a class, minimum assignments and quizzes must be completed, to demonstrate your understanding. They are not rigorous or time-consuming, but they are required to earn the badge.

Class has already started and I haven't registered / attended yet. Can I join in late?
Yes! Registration remains open after the first day of class - Go ahead and register and join us when you can, and be sure to view recordings and complete activities for the day(s) you missed.

How often is Teaching With Canvas repeated?

This introductory class is taught at least once per semester or term, often more than once.

Can my program or department request custom training?

Yes! Contact us by email at canvas_team@byu.edu and let us know if your needs - We will provide training on the topics you wish, on a schedule and at a location that works well for you and your faculty / staff.

Live training won't work for me at this time. Do you have

a solo / self-managed training option?

Growing With Canvas at BYU is the Canvas basics option authored by Canvas / Instructure. Follow the link, and select the "Join this Course" option (if you have a Canvas account at BYU) to get started. (This option does not award a training badge.)

Is this training available to BYU Online teachers?

BYU Online provides specialized instruction and training provided through BYU Online, and they will provide you with the information you need. Please contact the BYU Online office if you need assistance with their training.
